'Grace' - Lynda Lemberg & Jeffrey Allan Russel - Feature Film
Grace is an empath who works through her own melancholy by assisting the impoverished immigrants arriving in Montreal in 1830. When she rescues a traumatized Gaelic girl wandering with her dead baby in a temporary encampment, she takes her in and learns of the brutality she experienced when her farming village in the Scottish Highlands was set on fire.
When Grace's husband dies at sea, her father seizes control of her estate and forces her return to Scotland. Before she sets sail, she promises the girl to stop the men who wronged her. Once in Edinburgh, Grace learns of the enormity of her promise: the Gaelic tenant farmers are being violently evicted from the Highlands and exiled to the Colonies so that the landowners can populate their land with sheep -- today’s equivalent of mining for natural resources at the expense of the indigenous peoples. This is an ethnic cleansing. And Grace’s own family is complicit.
